The Type 903 integrated supply ship (NATO reporting name: Fuchi-class supply ship) is a new-generation large comprehensive replenishment vessel of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), designed by Zhang Wende. An improved variant, designated Type 903A, differs from the original Type 903 mainly in displacement, which has increased from 20,530 tons to 23,000 tons.A total of 12 ships have been built, with 9 currently in service. This class represents China’s new generation of large ocean-going supply ships, featuring significantly improved replenishment equipment compared to the earlier Type 905 supply ship. It is capable of conducting resupply operations through horizontal (side-by-side), vertical (helicopter), astern, and alongside methods, with the ability to conduct simultaneous resupply operations at four stations in three directions on both sides of the ship. Its cruising speed has also been improved over earlier ships built to commercial standards, such as the Qinghaihu, with a reported top speed of 20 knots. The advantage of higher speed in supply ships is that they can operate alongside naval task forces — for example, the Type 901 integrated supply ship is required to reach 25 knots. The commissioning of this class of supply ship marked the PLAN’s attainment of basic blue-water operational capability, a capability later demonstrated during escort missions off the coast of Somalia.
