Eastern Theater Command Uses 3D Animation Instead of Live Ammunition in Exercises Around Taiwan

Today, the Eastern Theater Command released a 3D virtual-real animation showcasing a joint strike by multiple branches of the military. The video depicts that during the exercise, upon the commander’s order to “fire,” the scene transitions to computer animation.

In the animation, ballistic missiles and long-range rocket artillery are fired simultaneously, while the Type 055 destroyer launches ship-launched ballistic missiles. J-10C, J-16, and drones also deploy a large number of missiles, with explosions observed in Taipei, Hualien, and Kaohsiung.

Analysis suggests that this approach saves a significant amount of ammunition while still serving as a deterrent.
