In line with the government’s “neighborhood first” policy, India has decided not to boycott the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics diplomatically, according to a report on the website of the Indian Herald newspaper on January 12, as quoted by Chinese media.
According to the report, the Indian government made the decision despite several NGOs urging a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics. The diplomatic corps is also said to have sided with the NGOs advocating a boycott of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
However, the report quoted top Indian sources as saying on 11 November that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the bold decision not to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics at the diplomatic level after consulting with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, despite the Foreign Ministry’s support for a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
This decision by the Indian Prime Minister was praised by many netizens on the Chinese Internet, who agreed that:
This is one of the few right decisions by Modi.
However, some other Chinese netizens believe that Modi should adopt the Indian Foreign Ministry’s advice to avoid bringing the coronavirus to China.
