China and India reportedly held their 12th round of military chief-level talks on July 31, which lasted nearly nine hours and ended with the two sides discussing ways to resolve the standoff between the two armies in eastern Ladakh. According to a joint press release issued by the two countries on Aug. 2, the two sides still have not reached a consensus to withdraw their troops from the border standoff point, but agreed to continue to maintain talks and work to ensure stability in the area of the Line of Actual Control in the western sector.
According to Indian media sources, India has recently increased its troops again to the India-China border area by more than 15,000. The Wall Street Journal also quoted Indian army officials in July as saying that both India and China have deployed tens of thousands of soldiers and advanced weaponry to the disputed border. The scale of frontline deployment between the two armies is at its highest level in a decade.
