PLA’s official site recently released a group of photos of J-11 fighters attending a free air battle exercise. These J-11 fighters are from the Western War Region and are using homemade Taihang Engine, and the exercise was conducted in a “specific airspace”.
Since 1995, Taihang Engine has been developed for over twenty years, now this type of engine has been used by J-10 and J-11 fighters, but meanwhile, a number of expensive Russian engines are still being purchased for J-10B, J-10C, J-11, J-15 and J-20 fighters, for more stable or better performance.
